How Is Product Classification Determined

Created by Usman Zaib, Modified on Mon, 28 Sep at 2:09 PM by Usman Zaib

Overview

Product classification is determined by examining the characteristics of the goods and identifying the appropriate customs classification based on the applicable tariff rules.

Factors Used for Classification

Depending on the type of goods, classification may take into account:

  • The type and nature of the product.

  • The materials or composition of the goods.

  • The function or intended use.

  • The way the goods are presented or packaged.

  • Other characteristics relevant to the applicable tariff classification rules.

HS Codes

The Harmonized System (HS) provides an internationally recognised framework for classifying goods. Countries may further subdivide HS classifications within their own customs tariff systems.

The appropriate commodity or tariff code should be identified using the rules and tariff applicable to the country where the goods are being imported or exported.
